2009: A Big Year for New York Unemployment Fraud


The Tonawanda News reports that in 2009 76 people from Western New York were arrested for fraudulently collecting unemployment benefits. These suspects were largely collecting unemployment while also steadily collecting paychecks, taking advantage of the State’s unemployment insurance trust fund. [Read More...]

NYC Marijuana Arrests Show Racial Disparity


In a story that may not be surprising to many, the New York Times revealed this week that blacks in NYC are far more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than other racial groups despite the fact that white New Yorkers are more likely to be marijuana smokers. New York State Crime Lab Operations Questioned


In a report from the New York State Police we find that one major crime lab in the state had employed an undertrained and unqualified analyst for 15 years before being found out. The investigation into the lab began in 2008 when problems in the analyst’s work were first suspected. [Read More...]

New NY DWI Laws Among Toughest in the Nation


New stricter penalties for NY DWI convictions unanimously passed the New York Assembly and the Senate, and the new law was signed by Governor Patterson. “Leandra’s Law” includes a number of DWI penalty enhancements, including felony charges for drunk driving with a child under 16 in the car, and mandatory ignition interlock device installation for all DWI convictions. Bronx Drug Bust Nets 53 Arrests
